Mid Century Chairs

Mid Century Chair, made 1960, upcycled, refurbished, re-upholstered, restored 2021
Two Mid Century Chairs, 1960

These two chairs, made in 1960, were in a rare state when I acquired them. They had several coats of maroon thick gloss paint on them and 4 different sets of upholstery, each one on top of the next. I liked the look of them, the shape, the legs and thought that they were worth a punt. What was interesting was the different upholstery on the chairs down the decades, all of them revoltingly dirty, the original upholstery in some sort of blue-black-grey tweed type fabric followed by brown Draylon, yellow vinyl and finally maroon vinyl.

I couldn’t find any pictures on the net of what the chairs may have looked like originally, so I’ve kept the chair backs natural with Danish oil, the frames are black chalk painted with black wax, the seat pads were re-upholstered, with the outer fabric a modern tiger print velvet feel fabric to give a pop of colour.

I upcycled them how I wanted them to look, not to please anybody else, or to keep them 1960 completely accurate.

The Way They Were…….
